  • Any photographers here? or knitters?

I just wondered if there were any other photographers on here? I've been doing professional photography for about 5 years now. And also digital retouching for other photographers.

I'm sure there have to be some, with all of you with small children.

I also am crazy into knitting. Still have a project to finish before Christmas - some felted booties for my daughter.

There are lots of both. I'll move this thread to "Crafty People - You know who you are" and you'll find your people. We've got some folks with serious talent on here, and then those of us who dabble in lots of stuff (uh, me ....), and excel at none.

I guess I'm what you would call a semi-pro photographer. I do weddings, portraits and events on the side and like Sooner hope to be a full-fledged professional some day!! I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I want my niche to be, but for right now I think I'd like to do more families and kids and fewer weddings -- they are exhausting .

I'm hoping to do weddings! I did one once for a wonderful couple and it was a blast (they knew what they were getting--I was paid $50) Engagements are my favorite. Anyone care to share blogs?

No weddings for me either - I did a few and found they were too stressful and not worth spending all day Saturday on it.

I'm part-time now, which is how I prefer it - in fact have packed much of my lights, etc. away until spring, because I have it in a separate garage, which has a heater, but the floor is just too cold in the winter for kids to sit on.

It takes a special person to photograph weddings - don't do them too cheap or you will burn out. A typical wedding takes about 40 hrs. of work when you figure prep time, shooting, processing, retouching, ordering and packaging. That's why it's so expensive. Your wedding couple was lucky to get you!

What are you in school for?

                      Doesn't sound like you're an amateur - you're a part-time pro! I love lightroom. I use it a lot, but only about 10% of it's capabilities, I know.

It was pretty exhausting--they really were especially nice people, though. (both of their former spouses had died of Cancer, and they met because he was trying to help her through it as his wife had died a few years earlier--she had two adorable little girls and now #3 is on the way!)

Not sure how much fun bridezillas would be...

At any rate, I'm hoping to work up to it (equipment and talent wise--geez is this stuff expensive!--as a possible way to earn money when kiddos come along and still be with them most of the time)

It's neat there are so many photographers on here...and maybe I should look into knitting

Not I. I'm not a crafty person in the very least!
My dh would quit his day job in a heartbeat for photography. He's been really into photography since we got married--mostly landscape until our daughter was born. Now he does portraits and needed new lenses... Or at least that's what he said he needed in order to take photos of her....

The first wedding I ever did was for $300 and it was SO not worth the money -- but of course it was worth the experience and I was able to build up my portfolio from that wedding. I charge many times more than that now, but even still I often feel like it's not enough. Weddings are a tremendous amount of work, and with my carpal tunnel and bad joints it takes quite a toll on my body. But I will admit they are SO much fun!! The couples I work with are fantastic and it's a wonderful feeling to be allowed such intimate access to one of the most important days of their lives. So don't get me wrong, it definitely has its perks .
