I've recently been inspired to teach myself hand embroidery because of all the cute baby items I have seen around. I figured I could make them cheaper myself and was able to find white bibs at Babies R Us, but can't find cotton diaper covers at a reasonable price. Does anyone know of any websites or stores that sell just plain white diaper covers or any other baby items that can be embroidered?

I was similarly inspired when I found out I was having a girl. I did a couple of onesies. They were kind of hard! I would strongly advise against attempting stretchy materials! It was a pain trying to keep the same tension on both the fabric and the threads. I followed (or tried to follow) the advice of one of our members who recommended fusible backing. It stuck and then came off during the wash. I only did a few onesies and she's already grown out of them....but I'm thinking I might attempt a blanket. I was thinking of embroidering to accent/highlight an existing pattern (with sparkly thread or something) and then using that fabric, with batting and backing, to make a simple quilt type blanket.
Of course, this assumes I find some time to myself......Mom of 3, Veterinarian

I'd suggest plain white burp cloths. I did a lot of embroidery when I was a teen. My grandmother taught me. We did tea towels, pillow cases. I purchased a bunch of diaper flats when I was pregnant & used them first as diapers, then burp/nursing cloths and now I use them as kitchen towels & nose hankies. They would be good for embroidering too.Wife to Hand Surgeon just out of training, mom to two lovely kittys and little boy, O, born in Sept 08.

My favorite diaper covers are Bummis Super Brite and Thirsties. I'm not sure how well embroidering would work on them, but they both come in white.

I think if you try to embroider any diaper covers you would compromise the waterproofness of said cover. Maybe you could embroider wool covers since they are naturally waterproof and aren't coated with anything?Wife to Hand Surgeon just out of training, mom to two lovely kittys and little boy, O, born in Sept 08.

Thanks for the ideas, ladies. I started out on bibs - the ones I found are stretchy and terrycloth, which makes a pretty bad combination for embroidering though I might try the fusible backing mentioned. I attached (I think) a picture of my first completed bib.
Anyhow, I am actually searching for the white coth diaper covers - just the cutesy ones to cover their bottoms as they crawl about - as opposed to the functional waterproof covers. I would love to try a blanket, but for now I think I better stick to items where the back doesn't show!Attached Files
