  • dying polyester?

I'm trying to make my Halloween costume and need help. I bought a cheap body slimmer dress from Walmart in nude and I need it to be green for my Poison Ivy costume. Can I dye it with a RIT dye? Or do I need to paint it? Or glue ivy leaves to cover it? It's 74% polyester and 26% elastane.

Can I dye nude hose too?

You cannot dye polyester. But you might be able to dye the hose.

No experience with this, but from a quick search, it looks like what you want is a "disperse dye" - different from your basic RIT. "iDye Poly" is one I saw.

Since it is cheap, I would try spray paint for the dress, if you don't have time for fabric paint.

Hobby Lobby has a spray dye for fabric.

I would glue leaves though. More fun!

Thanks guys! I will look for the poly dye and go for the spray as a back up. Leaves will be glued regardless, but I want planning on covering the entire dress. That will be my fall fall back plan.

Obviously don't forget to check for allergic reaction/sensitivity because the dyes &/or spray paint/ glues will be mixing w/perspiration (FL Halloween is a lot warmer) especially since it's will be a tight fitting costume and polyester isn't known to be a very breathable, moisture wicking fabric. It sounds like a fun costume...I just would hate for you to develop a rash/reaction.

Good point about allergy/rash. It's tricky to plan a costume in Florida. Halloween could be 85 or 55.
