  • Sewing machine

I've decided it's time for me to learn to sew. Nothing major, just fun Pinterest projects. I will add in I'm super nervous and am doubting my ability to pull it off.

I've started kind of looking at sewing machines, but don't understand the lingo (presser feet, huh?) and have no idea where to start. I know I want a basic, easy to use, inexpensive starter machine. Any recs?

I have an inexpensive Kenmore from Sears. It is still trucking along great after a dozen years.

If you want an inexpensive machine go with something with very few stitches (straight and zigzag) and is not computerized. Metal parts inside and few bells and whistles will give you a sturdy machine. Refurbished machines are good too. I have two and both have been refurbished. My first was a basic 'mechanical ' old singer which lasted me ten+ years of frequent sewing and the second is a 15 year old Bernina (that I've had two years). I got the singer thru the singer factory and the Bernina through a dealer. People trade in the expensive models often to upgrade so there a usually a few good used machines floating around. Often the older machines are better made and you don't need fancy gadgets. My Bernina came from a high school.

MY handmedown machine circa 1994 has finally died beyond repair.

I bought a new Brother machine off of Amazon for about $135 during Black Friday week, and can't wait to start using it. (My Xmas present)

They have a basic one on sale for about $75 as well.

You are so sweet. City life has spoiled me though, made me all soft.

              Sewing machine

I have a bottom of the line Singer that I think came from Target. I've had it for 8 years and it's still going strong. I love it. I learned on my mom's singer growing up. I've also used some Bernina's and they seemed good too. I used some of the computerized machines in high school but all the bells and whistles seemed unnecessary. Like someone else said all you need is a straight stitch and a zig zag.

I have a hand me down Pfaff that I got from my grandmother. I've had it for twenty years and not a single problem. I'd try Craigslist maybe. I think sewing machines are a bit like exercise machines; people buy them with good intentions but some never use them at all. Used might get you a good model.

Mine looks like this, but obviously no computers on board! It's much older.
