Kelly, I've been working for a month, and I haven't improved THAT much. It will probably take me 3-5 more months to work up to a slow, drunken, turtle-paced 5k. Yes, I am THAT out of shape. A half marathon is not in my future. I know this because I loathe working out. It will not happen. I just want to be able to run/jog a 5k. Right now, the farthest I can go is about 1/10-1/8 of a mile. Maybe not even that far. At the end of that slow jog? My heart rate is 180 bpm. Walking, my heart rate is at 132. I "ran" with my son last weekend, and while I am dying and sucking wind with my heart rate through the roof, his is at 120, and he's laughing at me in his head. Not out loud. He wouldn't dare.

I highly recommend joining a running group at the local running store. In September, there was an all girls' group training for the Komen 5K. There were walkers, senior citizens, walk/runners, joggers, runners, and the hard core types. Having a buddy to chat with and an appointment on the calendar makes a huge difference. I love hearing everyone's stories, it is so inspiring. I have been passed by both people in their sixties and veterans wearing prosthesis. When I see this or hear these stories, I realize that even my sad sorry a** can try a little harder. More than anything, just keep at it. In the end, you will amaze yourself. I don't think I'm anything all that special but when I race, I'm rocking that mom-at-the-back-of-the-pack pace. Baby I AM a rockstar, if only in my own head.
In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.
