  • Predinsone and weight loss

Anyone have any luck with losing weight while on prednisone? I saw my already slow weight loss come to a screeching halt two weeks ago when I had to start 40 mg of prednisone. I'm hoping to start tapering soon, but in the meantime I've gained 3 lbs.

    Any tips?

I never had luck with weight loss, but I did manage to stop the gain. The initial gain is water weight, btw. I tried to keep lots of veggies on hand for the munchies. It's so hard. I'm sorry you're having to take it again and I hope you're feeling better soon.

      Thanks Kris.

I'm hoping that the 3 lbs is just water and not from my 'poor me I'll never be thin and healthy' attitude that I adopted for the first few days. I'm still working out so hopefully that and a better attitude will help.

I have been off and on prednisone for the past 15 years, most recently last June. Unfortunately, I gain weight every time on it. It is water weight, but it's become harder and harder for me to lose. I just drink a ton of water, reduce my salt and starchy carbs, and up my exercise. Prednisone is a great med for many things, but the weight gain is frustrating. I also have other side effects from dosages above 20mg q day, but it sounds like you're doing ok on 40. Hope you can titrate down soon!

I start tapering tomorrow! 5 mg / week so it'll be a while before I"m totally off, but I'm glad to start getting relief.

I see my GI doc next week to see what medicine I'll switch to since the Asacol isn't working anymore.
