I have found that if I take a nice brisk 30 minute walk, and just try not to sit on my ass too much the rest of the day, I can make my 10,000. It's not the most fun thing, but you can walk rain or shine or snow. I went to the post office in a downpour this weekend.

But, alternately, you could just set a calorie burning goal instead, and manually log your gym activities so that they count. I don't know how the Jawbone app works but on Fitbit I had no problem logging 2 hours of moderately active housecleaning and claiming my 400 calories for that.

ST, as for syncing to a phone, my Fitbit requires Bluetooth 4.0, which I guess I have on my iPad mini but certainly not on the iPhone 3gs that I use for an iPod (I don't have a smartphone). Frequent syncing on the go is fun and all, but it's not totally necessary either. It also comes with a USB dongle that you just plug into a computer and then it'll wirelessly sync with that if you're near that computer and it's on. So if you just sit down once a day to your laptop, you don't even have to think about it -- it'll detect and sync that way.

Err. Ok. I guess that motivates me. I really miss sunny AZ.

Off to walk in the cold!

I hear ya. Ohio was a shocker to me when I realized that, unlike Portland, I had to learn how to cope with and live in the snow and sub-zero temps for months on end! And even now with temperate Northwest coastal winters, I have hardly left the house for the whole month of December, because ugh! Forties and raining! This week, to get my 10,000 steps, I'm doing it, and it feels surprisingly good to breathe that crisp fresh air. I just try to remember how in Cleveland I used to park my car most of the winter and only drive once a week. All other errands and commuting to work happened by bus or foot. You get used to it! Wear plenty of wool!

(But today will be a real challenge. DH goes back to work so instead of having him kick me out the door to walk as long as I like, I have to figure out how to drag the kids along as well...)

Kids and cold would certainly be more of a challenge! Good luck!

We live in a city, so it's nice that I can walk to stuff, and did all of the time until November. I doubled up on down (I'm sure I looked super slim, and it was ok after awhile. I actually had a major shopping score on my walk anyway - have been looking for running yaktrax everywhere and finally found them!

Now if I can just make myself walk to and from hot yoga again (it's so cold after being soaking wet), then I'll be all set with my steps.

I walked a bunch today. My bones are cold. I think I need to drink to warm up... Counterproductive?

I just got an Up24 yesterday. DS1 is having sleep trouble so my plan is to put it on him at night and then I can wear it during the day. I'll see if I can link in once I figure it out.

I did get the fitbit and like it. I need to figure out how to add friends. I connected it to LoseIt and ditched my blackberry at work and got an iPhone 4s so I sync it via that and the dongle.

I'm on UP too -- if you want to connect on there (and shame me into wearing it more consistently and making my goal), PM me your email and I'll try to connect!

I went back and looked at what I did. I saw you in my Fit Bit contacts and I clicked on you thinking I sent the request. But, when I went back and looked, Fit Bit has you in the contact list of those who do not have a FIT Bit. Not sure why that is.

I can only see two people in contact list who FIt Bit recognizes as having a Fit Bit. Dh is one of them. I know it's not accurate because my really good friend has a Fit Bit and it doesn't recognize her.

Am I doing something wrong? Can you see me in your contact list?
