  • My Feet Are Shot

Something I did/wore/etc. has really inflamed my feet. I went to a podiatrist for an initial consult about 4 weeks ago: X-rays, exam, and inserts to try. The pain is still there, and it's daily (most of the day as well) -- I ordered compression splint socks and straussberg (??) splint socks for PF to see if I can get some relief.

The podiatrist said there were no signs of stress fractures (thank goodness!) and based on my description and location of pain, he thought it was probably overuse and not PF. No problem, I stopped running completely (heartbroken, but necessary) and dropped to 4 days a week with HIIT/bodyweight/resistance training. Still wearing the shoes and inserts religiously - no dice.

I joined a new gym on Saturday, and dropped my old franchise. I'll be doing weight training and, depending on what podiatrist #2 suggests, low impact exercises only. (Yoga, Barre, Pilates, core work)
My appointment with podiatrist #2 is Wednesday morning -- I'm really starting to get nervous that I've done something bad.
I'm also wrestling with how this will impact my health and fitness goals, since I'm not at my maintenance place yet. I am aiming for an additional 15-20 lbs of fat loss, and putting on 5-8 pounds of muscle within the next 8-12 months. I know I should just relax and trust, but change is always hard.

Any shoe recommendations for everyday wear? I am never barefooted anymore, but nothing seems to alleviate the dull ache/burning feeling.

As you may recall, I went through this in the beginning of this year. The podiatrist did determine I had a foot fracture even though the X-ray wasn't conclusive. I had to wear a walking shoe for 6 weeks and I also bought inserts for PF. Since I couldn't do my daily walks anymore (the podiatrist told me to eliminate as much walking as possible while in the boot), DH bought me a recumbent stationary bike. I did that instead. I didn't like it as much and quite frankly, I felt like my weight loss came to a screeching halt as a result. Even after getting the all clear from the podiatrist, I just felt like I lost so much motivation and momentum. Try to hang tough and keep focused/active as much as possible to avoid making the same mistake I did.

As for shoes, I like my Asics. Now that it's summer, I wear my Nike flip flops often.

Argh, I was thinking of you and your poor feet this last week or two, because I have something in my heel starting to twinge a bit, or sometimes "zing" in that nerve pain way. It sets my teeth on edge! I was hoping you were recovered.

Hopefully the Wednesday podiatrist can give you input on shoe brands. I think they tend to be opinionated about that stuff. All I can tell you is that whatever thing I have in my arch, it's exacerbated by Keens and Toms! And Asics are working for me as running shoes and as everyday shoes when my feet are grumpy. I have some fleecy slippers with rubber bottoms that aren't bad either.

In all honesty, it's dietary changes that make the most difference for shifting weight. Being in an exercise habit just helps you to stay in your target range (as well as making your heart happy!)

Keep us posted after the podiatrist!

Affectionately known as, "the ugly shoes" around here, but they are fabulous. Was a huge help when I was suffering with PF and dd14 will borrow them when she is having dance related foot pain: https://www.dansko.com/Womens/Footwe...llic%20Leather

          Have you tried Vionic shoes?

Update: leaving the vacation rental and all those stairs has made a tremendous difference!
I'm also splinting at night and using compression socks -- I can tell things are improving, and I'm excited.
I've also abstained from back to back HIIT classes, and only attend 2-3 weekly, with weight training and yoga/barre/Pilates in between.

Just in case, I will be visiting one of our favorite orthos to check things out further.
