• How far? How fast?

So, according to the last thread, there are more runners around than I thought. So I'm curious. How far does everybody run? How fast? I'm curious because I really really want to increase my distance, but I keep hurting myself when I try. So I'm hoping to listen and learn.

So, I run maybe 1.5 miles, and in about 20 minutes. Not very far, and not very fast. I have been stuck at that distance for 4 years!!! I am always suffering by the end of the run, and that seems weird to me as 1.5 miles is not far, and I've been doing it for so long. It's to the point that I wonder if something is wrong with me that I can't run any farther. My dream is to run about 3 miles in about 45 minutes.

You need to insert walk breaks. Run 5 minutes, walk 1, Run 5, walk 1. You could run forever doing this and this will increase your mileage and endurance slowly and safely.

Also, although I complain like it's my job about the aches, get a buddy! Join a running group. You'd be amazed what you can do in a pack.
In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.

This is very smart.

Yes! This is how I progressed after my last kid. First I did the obligatory couch-to-5k. Then I paid the money to train with our local running store's group. First the 5K class. Then a run-walk distance class. Then the slowest pace group class (12:30) got me to be able to run without stopping (they still took water breaks every 2 miles). For marathon training, I did the 12:30 group on the weekends (the long runs) and the 11:30 group on the weekdays. I would have never pushed myself that far by myself. The runs with a group were always mentally easier than anything I did alone.

Siderant: Of course some corporate conglomerate bought out the local running chain and decided it was too expensive to pay coaches for each running group. So now they charge $70/month for group runs where they give you a route and have water out. You still run "with" people, but it has totally defeated the point for me, except for the ability to run in the dark safely. I quit when that happened and my running suffered over the summer...see below.

When I'm not pregnant, I aim for 4-6 miles, 2-3x week. It doesn't always happen. Usually it's at a 12:30-13 min pace, but I take walking breaks on my own. It also varies WILDLY with the weather...I can do way better in 50 degrees than I can when it is still 90 degrees at 8 pm with 80% humidity and little shade. Ugh, Texas.

Pregnant...at this point I can drag myself through 1 mile running at like a 14 min pace. From there on out I'm run/walking or just trying to walk as fast as I can. As 20 weeks the round ligament pain is already getting to me and the feeling of having to urgently pee as soon as I start running is getting old. For now I'm trying to do a 5K of something 2x a week. It's annoying to devolve so quickly, but I didn't exercise at all with my first three so I guess it is better than nothing!

So, I'm wondering, am I overreacting to my aches? Should I expect to run with some pain? Is there a difference between an ache and an injury?

So, newbie question, does 12:30-13 pace mean running a mile between 12:30 and 13 minutes? That means that my 20 minutes for a mile and a half is not that slow, it is right in there. Yay!!! I am not as slow as I thought I was.

Haha yep, admittedly I am in the slowest running groups. It's all relative, right?

I thought I was MUCH slower than EVERYBODY else. So I am delighted! To hear that others run like me. I guess I don't get around enough lol. I don't think there are running groups where I live.

It’s all relative. I find that female runners tend to cluster in 2-3 time groups. There’s the super fast, competitive runners who ran in high school/college who run 6-7 min miles. There’s the good amateur runners who run 8-10 min miles. But the largest female group is usually 12-14 min miles.

I have always felt weird about my times because I’m sort of in the middle but I run more frequently than the average middle runner (the implication being that I should be faster if I run 5 days a week). Most of my friends who are still running in their 30s are the 6-7 minute milers so I feel slow.

I think the moral is that most running is pretty solitary and you always feel like the one who isn’t fast enough.

What do you all do with your kids when you run? Take them along? This is my holdup right now. Before kids i was running ~3 miles 3-4 times a week and now I just can't figure out how to get out there. I don't currently have a way of taking them along, and I'm not sure I'd like to anyway. Doesn't it get boring for them? I ran a couple of times with just one kiddo and found that pushing a stroller and running is a whole different workout.

That's half the reason I joined the running class...it was at 5:15 am. Honestly, I STILL had issues getting back in time for DH to leave on some rotations and had to skip altogether some months. Now they all are in prek 2x a week, so I use those days or go to the Y and run inside (ugh). In the summer I'll go in the evenings after DH gets home, but it is hot as hell here.

I still go out with the giant 3.5 year old in the stroller sometimes though--it's a treat for him. My kids have always loved it. But you are so right in that it hurts!!! And sometimes he yells at me to go faster.

I’ve run with a single, then a double, then a triple stroller. We’ve put thousands of miles on our running strollers. We went first thing in the AM (in the stroller by 6:45), home by 7:30-45, then breakfast, shower, and dressing until 8:45 when it was time to go to preschool.

Admittedly, I only did the triple for a few months before my oldest rode a bike alongside but YMMV depending on the child and your sidewalks.

Kids don’t object if you start youngish and it’s part of their routine.

Oh and if you go when they’re still waking up, it’s not boring. But mine all took stuffed animals and books too so they’re fine. And who cares if they’re a little bored for the last 5 mins? You’re teaching them a lesson about taking care of yourself.

Trust me, I have had kids scream 50% of the run. Had to stop and discipline. Threatened many loss of privileges, etc. But I just put my headphones on and kept going.

I am seriously trying to tease this one apart. houseelf , what is the difference between an ache and the pain of an injury?
