• Cortisone Shots

So, I've complained here before about my hip bursitis. That gets in the way of my running, and what should I do? Finally I got a cortisone shot. It seems to be helping already and it was only two days ago.

So, my question is for others who have had these shots. TulipsAndSunscreen I think you mentioned getting them, and I'm not sure if anyone else has.

What happened? How was it for you?

It was the thing that got me over the hump to getting better. I had to remember to not overdo it because it reduced the pain so dramatically (mine was really bad, I couldn’t even move in my sleep without pain). It allowed me to go to PT and start healing.

I did PT to balance my leg muscles better and she also did ice and stim treatments. It was a slowish process (5-6 weeks of PT twice a week) but really the cortisone shot was critical to it getting better. Because I couldn’t even walk before it

To be clear, I stopped running and only biked while recovering. It killed me (I was in peak marathon training) but it was necessary.

I'm glad to hear that your experience was so positive. To be clear, my hip is not nearly as bad as yours was. I have bursitis, which hurts when I run. But I can walk just fine. Sometimes it seems like the bursitis just solely wants to prevent me from running lol. But on the other hand, I've only been able to run/walk about half a mile recently, without more pain that I was willing to suffer. Because I don't want to totally damage my hip. So, yeah.

I've had two shots before that didn't help. So I was only cautiously optimistic this time. But I'm really glad that it is helping. I did it Tuesday, have rested it since, will walk today, and run tomorrow.

Did you get to run that marathon? That timing was truly sucky.

Nope. No marathon that round. I’ve run 4 others but never got to the starting line of my first.

I did it to myself. I didn’t stop when I got injured and kept putting in the mileage. It was stupid and I was young and reckless and figured I could run it off.

And right there, that is what I am afraid of doing. I won't let something relatively little become something big.

Well that was the thing. First it hurt only when I ran long, then on shorter and shorter runs. Then it started hurting when I walked and finally at night.

And I just kept running like a moron. I thought it was ITB pain so if I could just stretch it more it would be fine. But no.

The craziest thing is I saw an orthopod who suggested a hip scope. FACE PALM. Talk about going maximally invasive right out of the gate. Luckily I got a second opinion.

It wasnt't ITB pain? What was it?

And I totally understand the mindset of keeping running inspite of pain. And telling yourself that it is not a big deal, and will go away.

That is exactly what I am trying to avoid.

So, rereading your previous posts, it sounds like the shots did not heal your hip. But they did lessen the pain so you could function, and get the treatment that did heal it. Is that right?

Steroid shot is usually coupled with PT.

Where is your pain and what is it like?I think I have bursitis or an impingement in my hip.

The pain is mostly toward the outside. Sometimes I feel weird stuff in the joint though. It is usually a dull ache, but every so often I'll get a sharp pain. Never like that.

Yeah the shot just allowed me to go to PT.

What was your diagnosis? My bursitis is an inflammation, as opposed to a structural injury. So, the steroid should bring that down. I shouldn't need PT. Does that sound right? Or did I misunderstand my doctor?
