      • Hm. Just realized that there is a huge running event here in April, and it includes a 10k. I'm thinking about trying it…but $50 to run 6 miles after fighting for parking? Really? Meh. But it's chip-timed and I'm kind of hankering for an "official" race time to put in my Strava. Ponder, ponder...

        • Week 5 of waking up early / getting to the gym by about 7:30am. Most days I do 30 minutes hard cardio and 30 minutes brisk walking. Some days I do closer to 60 minutes hard cardio. I'm working out at least an hour 5-6 times a week. I feel great, and was thinking I was trimming up until I took a picture with a colleague and was HORRIFIED. So I went home and measured my waist and hips. No change. Weighed myself. I've gained 5 lbs.

That was on Friday. I'm almost over it. Trying to start tracking calories again. In general I'm so worn out I simply don't have it in me to do a restrictive diet.

The only change I've noticed, which is cool, is since I got the FitBit at Christmas my resting heart rate has gone down 10 points. Now if only those 10 points could lead to 10, 20, 30 pounds...

          • I seriously would care more about your RHR than your measurements. That's so awesome! Love thine heart, it's the only one you've got!

Poor hubby is pretty annoyed by the chilly damp season, combined with a tough work schedule that restricts his time to work out. So yesterday instead of having him try to cram his bike ride in to the limited time and gross weather, I walked him to work the long way round, and today we went for a long hike. It's nice to have the flexibility to be able to rearrange my plans and do that, even if it shoots my morning! Speaking of which, I have GOT to get some stuff done before kids get home in a half hour…ack…

              • Enjoyed the run today amidst local farms by my parents house. Felt good.

On the other side of the coin: made an appointment to discuss issues with my OBGYN. My workout on Monday was extremely challenging, pelvic floor wise, and it made me realize that if I want to get stronger/cut time for my running as well, I need some additional help. :/
It's not awful, and it hasn't affected my runs yet, but with distance increases and speed work, it may.

                • I was going to ask you. Some days I'm like, "I can run four-five miles with barely an issue, I'm on top of the world! Half marathon here I come!" Other times, well, let's just say that picking up a heavy bag of compost at the hardware store was a Bad Idea -- that day I wondered if I should ever try to run farther than a 5k. I have an appointment for an annual with my PCP, I think I might ask her if she knows of any options for me, too.

FWIW, weirdly interval training is sometimes less of an issue for me than long steady distance. I don't know why.

I usually try to aim my runs to go past horses, goats, cows, and crops! It's one of my favorite things about where I live.

                  • MB, I don't know if it's any consolation, but I picked up my activity level quite dramatically after *you* got your Fitbit at the beginning of this year and we restarted the challenges. Seriously started averaging 125% as many steps. And then I started running again in February. But my weight and bodyfat are up even though my fitness is demonstrably increased. I think there are a lot of reasons. I have two years of weight data in Fitbit, and I always hold or gain between December and April -- winter hibernation padding, I guess. I think I'm going to make some changes, because for me I think that when my weight doesn't match my activity level, it's usually because I need to get back to basics and re-inspire myself about eating to fuel my body and keep it in top shape. I've just reserved some books that have inspired me to heart-healthy eating in the past, along with some new ones, and in the meantime I'm going to re-read the books I own. (Mark Bittman, Joel Fuhrman, Andrew Weil, and Garth Davis for starters.) And…it might be time for a new alcohol challenge. Wine is figuring a little too prominently in my routines these days. >.<

Keep it up, your FB activity speaks for itself, go get 'em!

                    • Just done a run through of the Ambulance fitness tests. Glad I've been half marathon training! It's based around stepping on and off a 12 inch step carrying weights. During the test you stop steps to carry out mental and physical tests. If you're out of puff the tests will be harder. Max weight is 30kg, 66lbs as two equal dumbbells of 15kg for 3mins 30s. Between the farm and logging I'm glad my grip's good.

Feel confident. Shame about the 3hr drive to the division HQ before....

                      • Thanks for those thoughts and words. I'm mostly over feeling bad for myself. Because yes, I do feel bad for myself. I've been going at this unsuccessfully for almost 4 years. Any other metabolism would've seen success by now. But that doesn't make me any less determined. Nor does stepping away from negative self talk. It's not like it's just a few pounds, I'm 30 pounds overweight. And I'm gonna figure it out.

I wonder too if it's winter weight, but then I'm not able to lose it in the summer either, so....this has by far been my most active Midwestern winter. The challenges have definitely gotten me outside for walks in between lessons, at the gym early, etc. thank GOD I actually enjoy working out. Even if it's hard to get there every morning I have no doubt that it's something I enjoy.

I started this week thinking I would go back to paleo. I just don't have the time or energy. And historically that's been a problem. When I don't work out regularly I have time / attention to focus on calories and diet, but when I'm rushing home from the gym to get to work my diet slackens. It definitely has the last couple weeks. I'm gonna keep up the 1hr cardio every day, yoga once a week, and I'm starting to track calories again. Try to stick around 1500-1600 calories. Weigh in another 3-4 months.

                        • I love the determination, and especially the commitment to leave negative self-talk behind. I totally understand that the ongoing struggle sucks and is stressful, but I'm so happy that the working out part isn't torture!

Looking forward to hearing how you find a groove you can stick with through all of life's curveballs.

LOL. I can't help it! Kids go to bed at 9pm and I start doing chores at 9:30…

I only ran for 30 minutes today (plus cool-down) but I went moderately fast and it felt really, really good. I'm liking the every-other-day routine. Taking a walk on the off-days keeps me active, and the break from sweating and stinking and huffing and puffing keeps it fun. I might ramp up to 4 runs a week, rather than 3, in April.

I just added mileage a few weeks ago, but will also be adding a running day next month.
It feels good to find new ways of challenging yourself, doesn't it?
