Thanksgiving question

Do you do appetizers for Thanksgiving? Or do you dig right into the turkey and fixings? Do you put all of it on one plate? Eat the fixing first, then the turkey? Or all at the same time?
Odd questions, I know...

Do you do Thanksgiving buffet style? Or do you cut up the bird at the table?

Anyway, to the questions. The one time I have hosted Thanksgiving we ate late afternoon so around 11am I put out appetizers (cheese ball, pumpkin roll, veggie tray) but not a lot just something to hold people. Then when we ate the big meal we ate buffet style, as much as I would have liked to put the food on the table, the table wasn't wide enough. We did put the wine and the rolls on the table.

I've never, ever had appetizers for Thanksgiving. The meal itself is so big there hardly seems to be a point!

Oh well.

Anyway. We put everything on the table that can fit on the table. My dad carves the turkey in the kitchen and loads up a platter which he then carries around and everyone will take what they want. He puts it on a buffet behind the table. On the table is typically the gravy, the rolls, both kinds of stuffing (regular sausage and the oyster), the cranberry sauce (homemade), whichever green veggie mom decided we needed (typically peas), the yam/apple thing that I make and the salt/pepper. and the butter. They have a huge dining room and the table gets all of the boards put in.

As for appetizers- some light munchies are usually served- we usually do a heavier breakfast w/ the intention of getting through the day until dinner is ready. We usually eat about 6pm.

The formatting of this thread is strange.

I like to have a few nibbly things out. I also like to serve dinner at the table if there is space but I'm funny about buffets. :huh:

I forgot part 2 of the question - sorry. We've always served everything at the table, but carve the turkey in the kitchen.


Is it bad to say I like the way this is formatted better? Things are spread out more.

I like the stuffed mushroom idea.

My brother's girlfriend wants to come at 11 to start the turkey (MAX. 11 pounds!), so I have to have some things out for people to eat.

I like the pigs in the blanket idea. she'd probably prefer them w/out the blanket.
