Is a porter a stout? Are they pretty close to the same thing?

They're different varieties, but both are dark beers (stout tends to be darker than porter). According to Wikipedia, stout was so named because it is an extra-strong porter.

I'll bet it will be ok for me to use a porter in a recipe calling for stout beer.

Yes, I am. Chocolate Stout bundt cake to be sent to the good little boys and girls participating in the cookie exchange (at least the ones assigned to me).

Kona Brewing does a good job! But oooh, Rogue Chocolate Stout would just scream to be in such a cake.

I ordered groceries from New Seasons and when I searched on stout this is what came up. I'm sure Rogue must have as well. I must have had my eye on a six pack. Next time.

When my brother was here visiting and we were all getting on each others nerves, I dropped him off at the Rogue Brewpub and gave him a map. I think he stayed there the whole time.
