    ever purchase a cherry pitter?

If so what did you get and do you like it?
My kids and Dh are asking for me to make a Clafouti again and I would rather not de-pit by hand. I would also like to use it for olives if & when we get a harvest.

I bought one. It only made the process a tiny bit less painful.

Funny you ask...on my list to call is the cherry orchard to see if I can get more pie cherries. More produce adventures when DH is out of town.

I did get a cherry pitter. I *think* it is the zyliss. I'll go look for photos online. It does help. I read a newspaper article suggesting to do it with a paring knife. I don't think so! I've used this one for bing cherries too so that TenE can eat them without me worrying over the pit.

eta: This looks similar to the one I have but not exactly:

What exactly were the cons? I am assuming you must wear an apron in case of squirting?!

Nellie did you research the options out there? If so what made this The One?

I didn't research much. There were two in the store and I thought the Oxo one looked a little funny with the splashguard deal. Though if you are concerned about staining, that one might be a good pick. I think I wore an old t-shirt while I did it.

I'll check Fine Cooking -- they like the Oxo one:

Do the cherry pitting inside of a plastic ziploc bag. It leaves the pits in the bag and keeps the squirting contained. Then, just trhow away the bag with the pits. Viola!

The main issue was having the cherry lined up properly - if you missed the pit w/the first run-through, it only got messier. At least w/a knife you see your target. There's nothing that will make it a speedy process though ...

I'd like to have one of those right now (but not pay for it). I've got 10 pounds of tart cherries in the fridge. Fingers crossed for a new Jon Stewart and Colbert Report tonight to keep me entertained while I pit.

Thanks girls, now I know what to ask my friend to bring from Ukraine. My mom used to have a cherry pitter that was sort of a gun and you pressed the trigger that would punch the pit out. I loved shooting the pits all over the kitchen.

I've been making Clofutie with apples and pears but would love to try the original cherry one.
