Shallot emergency

What does it mean when a recipe calls for shallots?! If it calls for "2 shallots," does it mean 2 WHOLE shallots/onions. Or 2 segments...?

Ug. Nevermind. I thought it was divided like garlic. I'm so stupid. I didn't think to take the skin off and see what it looked like inside.

Two whole ones, though shallots vary so much in size I prefer them to give a measurement in tablespoons or at least say small or large.

Thanks! I ended up picking up two medium ones. My mil gave me recipes that dh likes and they all have shallots in them. What is a Japanese kid supposed to do with shallots?

I'd bet my paycheck that this is the first time in the history of the English language that someone wrote the phrase "shallot emergency."

I mean, in general, emergencies don't involve vegetables. But, a shallot? Such an upscale food? You'd never think it!!

You can usually substitute red onion for shallot, if that makes your life easier. I love shallots and add them to just about anything though.

I have never cooked with shallots. They look like rotten onions. I think they're really great though - the soup turned our pretty tasty!
