  • Useless Spices

So, in doing my every-so-often spice check, I figured out what I had, what I needed to replace and it dawned on me-

I have never used the majoram in the spice rack.
    Then I kept on perusing:

Fenugreek? Once when making an Indian dish
Celery Seed? Once for a crock pot dish no one liked
Onion powder? Rarely. (garlic powder I use when I'm being lazy but never the onion powder for some reason)
    Shrimp boil
    Fish fry spices
    two kinds of meat rubs

In the fridge is even more oddness:
I have four different kinds of mustard (sadly no Stadium Mustard...hint for whomever gets me for secret santa)
    Two different kinds of horseradish
    four different kinds of mayonnaise
    Dark sesame oil
    Chili oil
    walnut oil
    three kinds of olive oil
    two balsamic vinegars
    red wine vineger
    white wine vinegar
    champagne vinegar
    cider vinegar
    Corn salsa
    regular salsa
two kinds of pickles plus two kinds of relish, plus a corn relish

and a big ass jar of pickled herring.

and that's just the opened stuff- in the cabinet I have all kinds of condiments that I buy and then hopefully find a use for.

    I scare me

fenugreek - yeah, Indian dishes and taken as an herbal supplement for breast milk (clearly you have no need for this).

celery seed - i've got an awesome bread/roll dish we make at thanksgiving -- only time i ever use it.

stadium mustard - i must have at least 10 bottles. MIL caught wind we like it and brings us 2 or 3 every time she visits (she also brings the boys inexplicable boxes of Nutra Grain bars). We'd have to be mainlining the stadium mustard to go through that much. I'll send you some.

Maybe I'm missing out...what's stadium mustard? It's flair-worthy, so there must be something to it.

Onion powder is good on grilled burgers.

          Re: Useless Spices

I have a ridiculous amount of indian spices and powders that a friend in Phoenix gave me. Most of them I use, but:
          Methi?
          Limdo?
          Asafoetida powder?
No clue. Clearly I need to do more Indian cooking!

            Ask Jenn.
            Asafoetida powder?
I bought that to go in Jenn's amazing Indian potatoes! The fenugreek too!

I use red wine vinegar and rice vinegar all the time over fresh vegetables in the summer. Splash some on tomatoes, onions, basil, cucumbers and mozarella. It really enhances the taste.

Are you supposed to store oils and vinegars in the refrigerator? I have mine in the pantry above the stove ... should I be refrigerating them? (Just wondering b/c I noticed that Jenn listed the oils and vinegars as being in the fridge.)

You are right, it is ground fenugreek. I have other fenugreek too!

And I looked up limdo - it is curry leaves!

Remeber though that I live in South Texas where it's 80 degrees or higher for the better part of the year- I don't want things to breakdown faster than they should from heat exposure.

No clue on curry leaves. Curry (as a spice) is an English invention from when the Brits were ruling India. They tried to make a single spice blend to create the flavor of one of the "curries". I have no idea which spice they'd be referring to as a curry leaf.

I have a bag of curry leaves in the fridge. I know they are for Indian food and that the friend who gave them to did something yummy with them before. But what was it? I'm closing in on a year. I doubt they are good anymore.
