  • Ladies it's all in the brining - Turkey success!!!

Here's the recipe I used for my first turkey and it turned out awesome. Last year I forgot to brine and it wasn't nearly as good. Thought I'd pass it on for those who are cooking this year

it works really well for chicken, too (even pieces/parts).

I've only made turkey once...and I brined it....but then when I used the drippings to make gravy, the gravy was way too salty....the turkey itself wasn't, but the drippings were. Was that a function of the brining? Or was my brine to salty to begin with. It was a couple of years ago and I don't remember the recipe I used or anything. The turkey was great though!

Did you rinse the bird after removing it from the brine?

I've used the Alton Brown dealio every time I've made turkey. The first time I made it the bird itself came out too salty because I didn't use the recommended amount of water in the brine (didn't have a big enough bucket). Culinary genius, that. It came out tasty the next two times I made it, though. I'm off the hook this year.

I just saw a jar of "special brine with herbs" at my local grocer. Looked like a great idea to duplicate at home as I saw the small jar was $7.00! We always brine our turkey but had never thought of adding spice too.

I just put the kids in the car with all my baked goods and drive 3 miles to my mommie's house. Perfect turkey. I don't have a clue as to how she cooks it. :P
