  • Potluck. Ack!

Ok, so I live in the Midwest now where everything is a potluck. Seriously, I cannot go anywhere without a covered dish. I'm not used to this and I have no idea what I should be bringing. I bake (or, rather used to bake) but it seems that there are always rules about what I can bring. For instance, "If your last name starts with A-L, bring a non-dairy vegetarian salad or side dish." I usually end up bringing some unpopular dish that I threw together at the last moment that doesn't travel well and is completely ignored. What are your go-to potluck dishes? And please give me a simple non-dairy vegetarian/vegan side dish recipe that may satisfy a crowd.

I generally don't like cooking, so I'm no help, but your post had me laughing! Thanks for making me a tiny bit less homesick.

Wow, you will be completely prepared for J's preschool treat rotation: a nondairy, nonpeanut, gluten free snack!

No seriously, I'm nobody's cook but I love veggie trays and dip or a nice salad. I like to have something that I can completely nosh on without feeling guilty. I submit that a veggie tray is a nice carry in dish because who has this kind of variety of veggies and dip on a normal occasion?
In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.

I think I have some good recipes for you... I have to check my computer when I get the kids to bed!

Along those lines, a fruit salad is simple and generally gets eaten.

I was thinking candied sweet potatoes might be good this time of year, but I don't know if the butter would be considered "dairy" for these purposes.

This is my FAVORITE little snack that is never left uneaten!
              I love it.

              I thought I had more!
But I agree with Deb and Kelly - can't go wrong with a veggie platter, or a fruit salad!!

I'm no help when it comes to cooking. BUT the mom's group here does a cute twist on the potluck. They have "Salad play dates" The host provides the salad and everyone else brings stuff to put in the salad. It couldn't be easier for us non-cooking types! Suggest that next time.

We have a vegetarian in the house. She loves homemade salsa, hummus, veggie spring rolls, and pasta salads. All are either vegan or can be made non-dairy vegan.

Truly, salsa can be time consuming to prepare, but is usually very well received and holds up in the fridge well. I usually make a giant batch (seriously giant, as in a couple gallons) and it only lasts in our house for maybe a week.
