I didn't know I could find a fresh turkey...I'll have to look. Oh, the agony. My mil was supposed to come in last night but her plane couldn't take off because of bad fog ... so she is coming in today. My kids have appts. in the cities, so I'll be driving out there soon ... maybe I can pick something up there! I was referring to your recipe, btw ... I only have one oven to work with, so I'm thinking that it would be a good idea to make that in advance!

If Leni wants the real American Thanksgiving experience, have her help you. Since she doesn't know how the dishes are made, she'll have to listen to your directions and follow your lead.

Lol. Wendy, that would never happen! Her follow my lead? Chuckling! I have come up with tasks for her though. I want her to make a german dessert that I don't know how to make. Im planning on her teaching me that!

I have the same prob with one oven...and we'll be out of town tonight and tomorrow so I made cranberry sauce and pies yesterday...such a pain! Plus DH is post-call on Thanksgiving...in our noisy loft apartment...with my family here and while I need to cook. Ugh. Oh well.

Good luck! I'm sure it will be great! And diggitydot is right...she doesn't know any better, so do what makes you happy on thanksgiving -- don't make yourself crazy!

Fresh turkeys are more expensive, but should be able to find them. If you contact a food co-op, they could probably point you in the direction of some good-quality local birds.

I've done it many times ... science/schmiance. Of course, if those scientists are on to something and you make everyone sick, Leni will never, ever forget.

Fresh turkeys are more expensive AND will be harder to come by at this point. I cannot even fathom how much one would cost at Whole Foods. I spent $35 for my fresh turkey (16 lbs) at TJ's ... and didn't get the organic one.

LOL. The first time I made her turkey was the Xmas right after Andrew was born. DH and I were newlyweds, Andrew was 14 days old, and I had never cooked a turkey before. I didn't know that there were bags of giblets and the neck in there .... ooops. I washed it out and put stuffing in. Imagine Leni's horror when we pulled the neck and baggy out with the stuffing. Groan. I don't know how I missed it! She has never forgotten it! Me neither! LOL

I'm making a pumpkin pie. My mommie insists. And since I do things like call her on a Sunday afternoon and ask her to make dinner for my family, it's the least I can do. LOL

I'm also making some veggie dishes. I don't know if they will be edible though. I had to verify with the checker at Kroger that I had zucchini and butternut squash. I found recipes on Pinterest. I'm also making asparagus. Not from a can. Lord help us all.

If all that fails, there will be brownies with Bailey's in them so I will be forgiven any mishaps. I bought cherries from the baking section so I may even go wild and add cherries to my booze brownies. LOL

Meh. I haven't gotten a turkey yet. I'm going to Costco tomorrow along with all the other poor schmucks around the dc metro area. Lol. Last time I waited til the last minute I got THE last turkey. It didn't have a tag so everyone had left it there. I took it to the fish guys and they weighed it and tagged it for me!! Easy peasy. If there is no turkey I'll just get a turkey breast and forego the Big Bird.

We don't have any dark meat lovers so I usually just buy 2 8lb turkey breasts. This year we are cooking them encased in a bacon weave, soooo yummy!!!!

Since O & I don't eat meat I'll be making a veggie lasagna & apple crisp. I'm sure Dh would like me to make him a cornish hen but it ain't happening.

Tara-- any special instructions on the bacon weave?? No fresh turkeys available... No big deal. Makes dh happy. We don't like dark meat either.

My mom always makes a fresh ham for Christmas...get the raw bone-in ham....slice up a bulb (yes a lot) of garlic and then make stab holes all over the ham and shove in a slice of garlic. Sprinkle some salt (garlic salt maybe) and pepper over the outside and roast fat side up (so it bastes the meat). Super yummy and not at all like a traditional cured ham.

The kids and I are heading to a friends house and crashing her family Thanksgiving. I'm supposed to be making a vegetable side dish. I better think of it soon!
