  • Joy of Cooking

Just got the Joy of Cooking in the mail today (75th anniversary ed) and HOLY SHMOLY that's a big book. Anyone have a favorite recipe from it they'd like to share? I've never owned a copy so I need a couple of good ones to try out first.

I saw the thread title and thought, "Not here. I'm ordering Chinese food, tonight..."

I love that cookbook. Mine is an older edition, but it's my go-to for every kind of generic recipe. "What can I do with this steak?" "How much butter should I really be putting in my mashed potatoes?" I make my lightly breaded sauteed boneless skinless chicken breasts from their instructions (though simple it's one of my DH's favorites, especially when I put herbs in the breading), and I made some KILLER flautas a couple of Christmases ago. I like their hot and sour soup. And their basic sugar cookies. I actually use their recipe for *oatmeal* of all things, if I want it to turn out just right: toothsome and lightly spiced. Mmm, Joy of Cooking.

That is my favorite cookbook. Pick it up, open it and learn something new. Seriously.

Is it completely wrong, that when I saw the title of this thread, I had flasbacks of 1987...finding my parents "joy of sex book"

            Barf.

            Carry on.

It is one of my favorite cookbooks. My dad has a version from the 50's that shows how to skin a rabbit! I have the newer version, 1997 I think.

The fettuccine alfredo is wonderful. The banana bread turns out perfectly every time. And I love the creamed chicken recipes.

I think what I like best about it is the explanation of the techniques.

Hmm indeed. I gifted it to my dad but never got it for myself. I just looked at the ultimate chili recipe in the Cook's Illustrated cookbook. Would the Joy of Cooking be a bit redundant for me at this point or is it an absolute must have?

It might be a bit redundant, but it is still one of my favorite cookbooks. I get rave reviews of the guacamole every time I make it (which cracks me up as I detest avocados).
