  • Steel-cut oats

    So, I bought a container of steel-cut oats yesterday because I read that they were they type of oats used in my beloved Jamba Juice oatmeal. I love the pop that Jamba's oatmeal has. So - besides the instructions on the package, how do you cook your steel-cut oats? Also, how well does it reheat? I would love to make a few days worth at a time and just reheat. Crockpot? DCJenn...

    I make mine in the micro, following the directions . My only advice is to make sure you use a big enough bowl ( mine is twice the size of bowl I use for the same amount of regular oatmeal).

      We make these every Sunday morning. We boil 4 cups of water then add 2 cups of steel oats. I then dump in a bunch of cinnamon...yummy! When it's done cooking (15-20 mins), mix in brown sugar and sliced strawberries. Yummo!

        I agree! We make them the way wgw makes them. I can't have them all the time though--too much fiber!

          This isn't directly what you asked, but I ran out of regular oats in the middle of an oatmeal cookie recipe a couple of months ago and substituted steel-cut for about half of the amount of oats it called for -- it was SO good!! I liked the unexpected "pop", as you called it. I think I cooked the steel-cut oats part of the way on the stovetop first before mixing it in the batter just so they could go ahead and soak up some moisture.

            1 parts oats to 2 parts milk or water, cut up banana, cinnamon, bake at 425 for 25 minutes.

              I love steel cut oats! I do a 2:1 ratio water to oats. Heat to a boil. Then set on lowest setting and let simmer for 30 - 45 minutes. This process is more like a slow steaming such as we do with rice. Comes out with a good consistancy and makes several days worth for reheating and eating. You can add whatever you like to them really. Fresh fruits and berries or frozen are fine. Some white or brown sugar, and favorite spices, ect... With steel cut oats about 1/2 cup gets me full. A little bit goes a long way.

                Coming out from under my rock...are steel cut oats just a different variety of oatmeal? Does it essentially taste the same other than the "pop" you all describe?

                  Steel-cut oats are simply the oat in whole form, cut. Our "regular" oatmeal is flat-rolled, where the oat is flattened and toasted. I only eat flat-rolled in the instant/packet variety (maple flavored), so I really can't speak to the taste! Although I do feel that with the steel-cut, you get a better distinction of flavors - you can taste the oats and the toppings. While the steel-cut are super filling, they're not heavy like the flat-rolled, IMHO.

                  I just pinned a recipe/technique for making them in the crockpot. I'll let everyone know how they turn out! Thanks for your help
