KitchenAid Mixer?

Three words: Costco return policy. I use ours (from Costco) about every other day to make bread using their bread hook. My old one broke after a year and I mentioned it to an employee at Costco when I was buying the replacement and they said "oh, that sucks! Bring it back"

Costco return policy is the bomb. We had a UPS that failed after the move-- I called the UPS manufacturer and they could help me with the warranty if I had a receipt, blah blah blah. I'd lost the receipt, so I went to Costco to ask for them to look it up. (Which they can do). They said, oh, we will just take it back bc it's under manufacturer warranty so it is covered by Costco too for the life of the manufacturer warranty!!!! I left with cash... Happy!

I think I might have to replace mine! I have an Artisan Kitchenaid Mixer with a 4.5qt bowl. I've had it for almost 10 years and I use it several times weekly. It's been moved at least 7 times and it has wobbled a little since the 4th or so move. I store my attachments in the bowl and unplug the machine when it's not in use. The other day, I was cleaning and bumped the machine. I didn't realize that I'd left it plugged in, having accidentally unplugged a different appliance from the same outlet. The machine turned on and wrecked all my attachments. Now I've tried twice to purchase a replacement whisk attachment and I can't find the right size attachment. It's been about 3 weeks and I'm desperate without my machine.

            MrsK, that's a bummer!

I've had my KitchenAid since my wedding 12+ years ago but I hardly use it. Maybe for cookies or muffins once a quarter and cake once a year. I just discovered you can use the dough hook to mix meatloaf and/or meatballs, so that's slightly tempting (though mixing with hands works fine and doesn't require hauling out the machine or dirtying the dough hook, so...) DH likes to use the food grinder attachment to make applesauce. That's about it. I'm glad I have it though and since I made space for it in the pantry instead of in a cabinet I find it easier to use and store. Anyway, I'd pick the lightest one if all else were equal! I know those motors have to be heavy to be sturdy, but the annoyance of lifting it is half of what keeps me from using it, so I can't imagine a heavier one!

You guys who use it more frequently, what are you making? Reading this thread, I feel like mine is underutilized! I use mine like once a quarter for cookies or similar.

I don't bake much and we use our bread machine for bread so that makes sense. We don't eat meat much either although it's a good idea for meatballs.

Yep, ditto on the not baking and the bread machine. But I've been pleasantly surprised recently about how quick it is to mix up something like zucchini muffins with the mixer, and they're fast to bake too, so I am hoping to do that more often now that I can reach my machine easier. Plus holiday baking!

Bread bread bread. Occasionally other stuff. It's also awesome for quickly shredding meat (we make large batches of carnitas or shredded beef to freeze)

I bake a lot so I keep it on my counter and use it for everything from cookies, muffins, cakes, frosting, breads. I'll use to make large batches of egg whites for cooking too.

I bought mine last Dec as a 30th birthday gift to myself. I did way too much research trying to figure out which model to get. The pro model (which is the one at Costco) has all metal gears so it's a little more durable than the artisan models. That said the bowl on the pro model is really big, so it doesn't do such a great job mixing small batches of things. If you like to double or triple recipes then the pro is the way to go.

As for uses, it makes awesome whipped potatoes. I've bought some attachments the past few months - meat grinder and strainer (made homemade salsa and spaghetti sauce), the peeler corer (peels, cores, slices apples - makes zucchini "pasta" too) and the juicer (I couldn't believe how much juice I got out of 1 lemon!).

Soon there should be some great Black Friday deals out there. Happy shopping!

How do you use it for matzo balls? Just to mix up the matzo meal, eggs, and oil?
