  • Christmas menu planning

So, it turns out we're going to be 7 adults and 1 baby for Christmas this year... We've hosted Thanksgiving before, but on Christmas DH and I usually get something special for ourselves like lobster or steak, and have a nice quiet evening with a good bottle of wine. Now that we're hosting, I'm not really sure what to make! I'm thinking maybe a turkey, since DH hates ham, and also Swedish meatballs, because you can't do Christmas in DH's family without them. Mashed potatoes and maybe a couple pies... other than that I'm stumped. I usually do brussels sprouts for Thanksgiving, but it would be nice to mix it up a bit and do some interesting sides.

Anyone have favorite go-to Christmas recipes? I'm open to all sorts of suggestions. What are you making?

No suggestions, but I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone suggests.
We're hosting 6 or 8 adults and 2 kids this year. Thinking of doing a ham since it's easy (I think?) and I'm kind of tired of turkey. Of course our big beautiful dining room table is in storage this year, so we'll either be eating at separate tables or eating on our laps.

I've done roasts for Christmas -- a prime rib roast one year (extravagant!) and a leg of pork last year. I've also done a leg of lamb for a group. With the pork, I did a chile rub and served it with a potato gratin, braised cabbage, and homemade bread.

It's just us this year, but that's something I tend to prefer more and more -- less stress. Breakfast casserole and the option for mimosas here as well. Last year I prepared the casserole with veggies instead of meat: super easy!

I have a silicone mold with different Christmas icons that I may use for something like orange cranberry scones this year... It just sounds right.

Mediterranean lamb kabobs sound delicious, and I haven't made them in a long time. I bet I could DH on board to grill.

            I'm making this ham: http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandst...-christmas-ham
I made it last year and it was amazing. It requires salt cured, uncooked ham (Virginia ham), which is kind of hard to find but it's so worth it. If IL's decide to come, I'll have to make something else too because MIL doesn't eat ham.
I'm not making a huge dinner this year though. Everyone spends the day snacking on chocolate and cookies anyway.

I've done this soup, salad, and roast three years. One year I roasted a duck, everyone said it was good but I wasn't pleased. These recipes are easy in of themselves but it's a project. Definitely one of the most involved meals I make.

Pear, Arugula, and Pancetta salad (my family LOVES this one. We do it at Thanksgiving too)

DH is on call this year so it'll just be the two of us. I might find paleo alternatives but won't have time to figure that out until the worst of the semester is passed.

We have done a stuffed pork tenderloin with Bing cherry sauce. Very holiday but easy.

We usually do ham with all the same sides as thanksgiving.
