And... DH cracked a rotten egg yesterday. Ewww ewww ewww! I think he's traumatized and may never eat eggs again. How common is that with fresh eggs? These were from the farmer's market. I may need to go back to buying them from the grocery store...
I've never actually had a rotten egg (barring one or two that weren't developing during incubation, and promptly removed).

Bacteria usually gets introduced because Americans love to wash things.
When you wash an egg, the protective bloom that keeps the egg safe is removed and bacteria can easily enter the egg.

Eggs come out of a chicken's cloaca, which is also their poop-hole. At some point between the time they squeeze out (sometimes into a poop-strewn nesting area) and when you crack the shell and pour the contents into your food dish, you might want at least a bit of a rinse. Grocery store eggs are scrubbed long before they hit the carton (and yet salmonella still persists on -- and in -- some shells, and makes us nervous about eating foods with raw egg in them!) Homegrown eggs are usually just rinsed lightly at the most, and it's up to you to scrub them if you are so inclined. But some well-meaning chicken growers might scrub before you ever get them, which makes them more perishable.
