Aaaaand, I should have searched before opening a new thread on this. Any updates? I've got one and I have no idea what to do with it. Afraid to take it out of the box.

I just got one too! Also sitting in the kitchen. I've heard reading the instructions is mandatory.

If I can get my crap together, I might try steel cut oats tomorrow morning.

I pretty much just use mine like a crock pot, except I cook my recipes in an hour or less instead of all day.

We do a lot of vegetarian batch cooking (like cook on Sunday for most of the week). Would it be worth it in that case? We have a crockpot that we don't currently use.

I think it would be, especially if you got more than one pot insert, so you didn't have to wash it in between. The crock pot is nice, but only if you have the time to put it in in the morning for it to cook all day. The Instant Pot doesn't require that. You can saute inside of it, then turn on the pressure and let it cook quickly while you do other things. You can do beans quickly, and it makes rice...

I follow several groups on Facebook even though my pot is still in the box. I feel like it's going to be a learning curve and I need time to figure out how to use it and at this point I don't. In a perfect world I would love to use it and take less time to make meals. Most often I'm staring at the refrigerator hoping something will jump out at me to serve for dinner.

I just made an entire spaghetti squash in 24 minutes start to finish. I'm obsessed with my insta pot. I can never remember to put stuff in the crock pot and that thing is a miracle worker

So I took mine out tonight to play with it and read the manual...I'm really disappointed in the part that mentions a 10-40 minutes preheating time. Doesn't that defeat the point? Especially with a 10 minute venting time?

I was all excited about 3 minutes steel cooked oats tomorrow. I'm less excited about 25 minute steel cooked oats.

                    Am I missing something?

Ours is ready in a few minutes. Not sure what the preheating mention of long wait is.

It only takes that long if you completely fill it up. I usually put mine in saute mode while I'm putting everything in to speed it up.

I did potatoes last night and just finished steel cut oats. Both came out well. MrsK, once you go through the instructions, it isn't hard to use at all.

That being said, I think the advantage will be the "not having to watch it" aspect of it vs any real savings in time. I'm really disappointed in how long it actually would take to heat up and depressurize most things. I cant see making a soup in it often if I can be in the kitchen anyway. I used the quick depressurize both times because I wasn't willing to wait, but we have a kitchen with low ceilings and I could see that being a very bad choice over time.

So...cool, but not quite what I thought it was.

I've always done the quick pressure. You can put it on top of your stove and use the vent over it if you're worried about the ceilings.

I thought about that, but our vent is the kind under a microwave and isn't that strong. It might help some, but might make a mess too.
