Looking for your favorite Italian desserts

What are your favorite Italian desserts??

My mom is in a gourmet club (how the word gourmet and my mother ever became associated, I have no idea. ) Anyway, in three weeks she has to make an Italian dessert and she is really stressing out about it. She called me for help, but... I don't bake.

Any ideas??

I posted one for Italian Creme Custard. I also have one for Italian Cream Cake. Let me know if you want me to post that one. It is good, but the custard is to die for! I also have a great tiramiu recipe.

My experience in Italy was that they really didn't eat a whole lot of desserts. My friends did have a wedding cake but it was a torte made by the Austrian chef of the restaurant.

Gelato and some fresh fruit would be super simple and easy.

I think of custards like the one Heidi posted or panna cotta, tiramisu, chocolate and hazelnut (or walnut) combinations, biscotti and vin santo.

I used to make an orange marsala (or vin santo?) cake but have long since lost the recipe. It wasn't very sweet. Now I'm sad, I want that recipe back!

I have a love/hate thing with Tiramisu. It can be soooo good if done right. If not, it's really icky and you can't get beyond more than one bite.

Totally agree, it has to be worth every calorie.

Now I'm craving cannoli and those pinenut cookies. *sigh*

My fave, fave, FAVE Italian dessert is Cassata cake (also known as Italian wedding cake. It is made to perfection by Corbo's bakery in Little Italy in Cleveland.

On a slow day I also love a good Zabligione (sp?) ... but have recipes for neither, lest my little weight problem escalate to the point of earning me a spot on Oprah or Jerry Springer. :!
