I like Craig Claiborne's New York Times Cookbook. He was a food critic for that newspaper.

Martha Stewart's cookbooks are awful IMO. Her stuff doesn't turn out. I have the feeling she publishes without having actually tested her recipes

I love, love, LOVE "The Best Recipe" from Cooks Illustrated. They're these obsessive folks who will make 200 of the same thing tweaking the recipe each time just to find the "perfect" one.

If you want to go "All American", you could get "The Betty Crocker Cookbook". It was the standard for years -- although not my bag. On a slightly more upscale front, "The Joy of Cooking" is also an American standard - more for those who came of age in the 80's.

The Joy of Cooking is great. I second that. Even though it's had the same cover design for....ever, it's still found on most everyone's shelf!

Not sure if Silver Spoon is available but I know it's a popular one. DH loves it. For something that is on the extreme end of fine cuisine, you might want to try the French Laundry cookbook. Of course How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman is a great library addition.

              HUGE Cook book hound here:

The Silver Palate- the BEST party foods ever.

The Joy of Cooking is great.

My mom and I have different genreations of the Good Housekeeping Cookbook.

Death by Chocolate- by a restauranteur from Williamsburg, VA.

I'll Taste Manhattan. From the snooty Junior League of New York City. Also great party food and menus.

Any of the other regional ones- Junior Leagues around the country put out cookbooks as fund raisers. I buy them whenever we travel to get regional recipes.
