With the exception of maybe Harry Potter, I've never been so enthralled by such a long book.

I just re-read that a few months ago! It was better as an adult reading it willingly than when we were forced to read it in school. That part about Kunta with Kizzy's footprint? So heartbreaking.

    • I just read Fault in Our Stars so I could take DD12 to the movies after she read it. After that, I picked up All Joy and No Fun along with The Language of Flowers from the library.

      • The Language of Flowers was wonderful! I read it in less than a week and immediately got both my mom and boss to read it. Let me know what you think!

I'm slogging through "Landline" (kinda disappointed to be underwhelmed after 'Eleanor & Park', which was so magical) and "The Marriage Plot". To tell you the truth, I kind of hate "The Marriage Plot". I'm over a third of the way through and I hope it gets better. It seems so irritatingly and necessarily pretentious and it's so grating.

          It doesn't get better, IMO.

I'm surprised that it's irritating me as much as it is. It's almost like...aggressively pretentious. 40% into the book and I've found everyone completely insufferable.

            • Haha in The Marriage Plot? I love those characters! Reading Virgin Suicides now and hating it. So much I'll probably give up and start something else.

              • I picked up Divergent last night and could barely put it down. The kids are with their dad this week and I foresee a lot of laying in the hammock after work reading it and the second book.

I gave up on Night Circus - the story is fine while I am reading, but it isn't captivating enough for me to want to pick it up again.

I also gave up on the Elegance of the Hedgehog. *sigh* I so rarely like literary fiction. I wish I could.

I read that earlier this year. What did you think?

Very plot/character driven. Written in broad brush strokes but well done. I thought the relationship between the protagonist and her sister was especially well-written. Overall, it's a good book club book because it was easy to read, had a lot of momentum, and it provides a good basis for discussion of ethics, morality, class....What did you think?

                        • I agree that it's likely a good pick for a book club because of the discussion topics it presents. I had mixed feelings about it. On the whole, I didn't really like it. I became too focused on how selfish all of the characters seemed to be - Lou, Will, Will's parents/sister...and all understandably so, so while I could sympathize with them, it all started grating on my nerves after a while. I thought it was a good read, but I never felt I had connected with any of the characters and (possible spoiler alert - be warned) became irritated with just how much effort Lou put into trying to change someone's mind. It's been a few months so perhaps I'm having trouble digging up some of the things I *did* like about it, but I do remember feeling like it ended up being a much different story than I had thought initially.

                          • I might be one of the last people to read this book, but I just finished Gone Girl and I couldn't put it down! I think I set a record for myself in getting through 400 pages. I had to stop myself from reading it before bed because I'd consistently stay up until 12:30-1 reading it. It has the potential to be a good movie, but I don't think it could ever be as good as the book (as if the movies ever are).

Speaking of books turned to movies, anyone else not super impressed by The Fault In Our Stars? Now, I freely admit that I sobbed like a baby at the end. But when all was said and done, I felt like it was missing something. I think I felt like the relationship, or parts of it, were too contrived and forced (although it obviously worked well enough on my fragile emotions!). But I applaud the author for taking on the topic and narrator that he did, because I think he nailed her character beautifully.

Next on the reading list: East Of Eden. I expect good things from Steinbeck, but man is the length daunting...

                            • I haven't read any of those but Steinbeck is fucking depressing. I haven't tried to read him in a long time because every time I do I kind of want to kill myself. !
