  • Movies You Love to Hate

I had this conversation with my boss earlier- about movies that are so awfully terrible that they are actually kind of good and entertaining! I brought up the fact that I'd been subjected to watching "Overboard" TWICE in two months when spending weekends with friends. Oh my god that movie is so awful to me, but hilariously bad! I said that and my boss goes..."um, Overboard is my most favorite movie of all time!!" HA!

In your opinion, what movies are so bad they are good?

As a former dancer, I could watch Center Stage probably every day and still love it - the acting is SO terrible, but I still like it (I also used to dance at the same studio as a couple of the extras).

My husband and I also have a thing for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days - it seems like we watch it every single time it's on.

Yep - I am a fan of both of those as well, even though I know they suck. Pompous male ballerinas breaking hearts! Love ferns and Chinese Crested's peeing on pools tables. So much cheesy/awful goodness. Also...Bring it On. Yeah, I totally love/hate that one as well. SPIRIT FINGERSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Anything by that guy who wrote "The Notebook." Good grief. Terrible, insipid stories = terrible, insipid scripts.

Any of the Star Wars movies released after "The Return of the Jedi." Yeah--the original movies were campy and awesome in their campiness. Thanks for taking yourselves way too seriously while also blighting the world with "JarJarBinks."

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." Space aliens in an Indiana Jones movie. Wrong. Just so wrong.

That movie with Al Gore on climate paranoia. God, try going with actual scientists. We almost got thrown out, they were laughing so hard.

Any movie about Santa--ever--with the exception of "Miracle on 34th Street" (the original), which wasn't really about Santa.

Any movie with Melanie Griffith, especially that unspeakably bad movie where she infiltrated a Hasidic Jewish community. And yes, I include "Working Girl" as a movie I love to hate. I did not find her to be charming or endearing or whatever.

Leaving Las Vegas (I spent the entire movie thinking, "Please, please die in a puddle of your own puked up alcohol so this can end.")

Slackers (the indie film about...slackers in Austin, Texas. I lived, worked and went to school in Austin and hated those f**kers--get a job.)

And, most of all, anything with Gwyneth Paltrow. I don't think she's a very good actress and she comes across to me as insulated, entitled and utterly out of touch. And I genuinely cannot believe that she won the Oscar over Cate Blanchett, who is an amazing, multi-faceted, compelling actress who doesn't write sanctimonious books on organic cooking.

LOVE "Bring it On"! Any former high school cheerleaders here? It is shameful--I will leave it on whenever I am surfing and find it.

I cannot stand the movie "Ted", but it's one of DH's favorites. He and my dad watch it and laugh hysterically the entire time...then quote it afterwards.

I love the movie "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore. Even though it's cheesy and the acting is terrible, I could watch it over and over again.

I also love Bring It On! Great movie.

Former HS Cheerleader here! Bring it on warms my formerly-basket-tossing heart

Ugh..."Leaving Lost Vegas" disturbed me so deeply I don't think I can watch it again.

Ever After is so amazingly cheesy and wonderful and I, too, have watched it dozens and dozens of times. My cousin and I were just quoting Angelica Houston last weekend: "Darling, nothing is final til you're dead, and even then, I'm *sure* god negotiates!

That's what my dad and brother do any time Dumb & Dumber is on. Drives my mom INSANE. When we're visiting and my dad comes across it randomly, we'll sit in the sunroom and crack up listening to my GROWN, ALMOST RETIRED FATHER giggle over that stuuuupid movie in the other room!

Day After Tomorrow...can't help but I love it despite having been told it's terrible by everyone! Also:

                  Center Stage

                  She's All That

                  What A Girl Wants

                  Drive Me Crazy

Those are the worst offenders but I like most bad teen movies from when I was a teen...

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the one movie I can never turn off, but I find it completely disturbing. Man, Hunter S. Thompson was one freaky mofo.

Also, Fight Club -- total mind fuck. Weird little scrap of trivia? The author of that book lives in my hometown, maybe a mile from my old daycare provider. Apparently, he's a super nice guy.

After reading "Survivor", I've been wondering what he's like in real life...
