  • Rasputin's Daughter

I had a really hard time putting this one down. The narrator is, well, Rasputin's daughter during the last days of the Romanov dynasty. This novel is enjoyable simply because it is a quick paced enjoyable read. Further, the author is well researched in this era and weaves history right into the fabric of the story. For me, however, the most poignant aspect of the story was when the 17 year old narrator begins to understand her father's humanity, his greatness and his frailties.

I definitely recommend this one. I went out and bought this author's previous book, The Kitchen Boy, to read next.

I didn't like this but for reasons that won't affect most on this board. I found his usage of Russian words annoying. I don't think it was necessary to pepper the text with them, they did nothing for me, but I guess for most they bring some sort of authenticity to the story. I also didn't really agree with his historical angle. But then again I'm probably more familiar with that part of the world than his average reader.
