  • Golden Compass

I saw a preview for the movie when we went to see pirates. Conveniently, we were at the mall and Barns and Noble was right there so I decided to checkout the book. I love it. I have nearly devoured the book and have ordered the next two from Amazon!

It is sort of fantasy/young readers. The movie is the same people who did Lord of the Rings, but I would say it is more Harry Potter with a heroine instead.

I highly recommend it to all

Oh, Pullman has been on my list to read to DS for awhile. I have heard awesome things about it.

Now that I am almost done with the last book...I have no idea how they expect to market a movies of all three in the US. I've enjoyed them, but this is some serious anti-God stuff.

I'm on the third one right now- they are really good. I'm also curious how it will translate into a movie. It has some pretty deep themes...they'll probably fluff it up some to make it more kid-friendly? Anyway, I've enjoyed them.

My husband wanted to name our baby Lyra. We'll definitely be seeing the movie.

              Re: Golden Compass

I just finished the Golden Compass. I read it really to see what all the hubbub is about, and how very "anti-Christian" the book itself is. It is first and foremost a fantasy book. The world they are discussing isn't all that similar to our world. Although they do use terms such as Magisterium and Church, it seems to reflect more on the Crusades mentality, of the church taking over every aspect of life, and growing like some huge malevolent entity.

One of my favorite characters was the bear-- larger than a polar bear, with opposable thumbs, able to speak English and be an accomplished metalsmith. This doesn't threaten my religion.... This is a fantasy book, and though the author may be an atheist, it makes me wonder why he is so intent on proving that the human characters (and even the witches) have a soul. And when the soul is "cut out from them", they are no longer "human" and eventually die. I think perhaps Pullman is struggling with his own sense of what it means to be atheistic, really. There are lots of greater, controlling forces in this book (supernatural forces).

Anyway, I'll read the others. From what kate (and others) have said, the last book is intensely anti-Church.

                Re: Golden Compass

I actually thought that the movie (I haven't read the book) focused more on absolute power and unwavering allegiance. Perhaps I'm extrapolating to suit my beliefs, but I didn't think that this movie was worth the scathing anti-Christian hype.

                  Re: Golden Compass

DH just finished reading the series - I'm supposed to be reading it but I just am finding I don't have any interest in it.

His brief opinion of the three books:
Book 1 - The ideas of having the daemons be animals is interesting but the book is, overal BORING.
Book 2 - Much better book than number one. Better written and with a more interesting plot.
Book 3 - Poorly written. Seemed like it was just a clumsy cobbling of ideas.

Overall he was surprised anyone would find these books some of the most important literature of the last hundred years. He said that the entire series lacks the richness and depth of a series such as The Lord of the Rings or the cohesiveness and depth of the Chronicles of Narnia. Part of my lack of interest at this point is that both he and my sister (getting her lit. masters currently and a published author) kind of yawned about them. He's apparently an overhyped author and I got the impression that any controversy is much ado about nothing. Perhaps he drummed up the controversy in order to get what appears to be a rather poorly written and boring series off the shelves?

So, are you saying my time is better spent reading, say, The Complete Calvin and Hobbes? (Hey, they have philosophy AND religion in them!).

                      Re: Golden Compass

This is how I'm feeling right now.... Kate asked if I wanted to read the second book in the series, and I said, Not really... It's just so ho--- hummm.

I think I'll read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians second book instead...

                      Or perhaps Calvin and Hobbes.

(Or maybe a book for grown ups...)
