I wanted to like this book better than I did. I think the cover drew me in and made me expect more.
It's the story of a writer from New Zealand who rents a house in Sweden and develops a relationship with the elderly woman next door. Both have secrets and pain in there past. That last line that I wrote sounds a little cheesy -- and the book veers into that territory. The place descriptions were great -- Sweden, New Zealand, Tokyo -- and that is the author's strength. Given their situations and personal histories, the forged friendship came about too easily.
It was good enough to finish but not good enough to recommend.
