    Atonement

    Anybody? I'm 75 pages and and so far...eh. Last week I was in a coffee shop with my copy and the woman next to me was gushing about how it was her favorite book of the year. :huh:

    I'm going to get through the first section of the book and then decide. Usually I give it 50 pages. I'm mostly reading at night and perhaps this book requires more brainpower than I have to spare right now.

    I remember reading this two years ago. I enjoyed it up until its very unsatisfying end. (Sorry for the spoiler). I believe it is coming out as a movie. I have enjoyed other works by this author more.

      I read through the part one (and got the sex scene as promised by a book group member) and started skimming after that. It just didn't do it for me.

      I saw the movie last night. I like the two together. I felt that if I hadn't read the book, the movie characters would seem one-dimensional. There is not much dialogue in the book and I wasn't sure how that would flow into the movie but they did a pretty good job. Part of the narrative though is a better understanding of the characters. I *think* that if I hadn't read it, the story wouldn't flow as well.

      The cinematography was beautiful. So was James McAvoy. *fan*

        I have tried to read it through pg 75 but then saw Nellie's comment and flipped for another 75 pages. I'm so bored, the writing style is driving me insane. Should I keep going or give up and just watch the movie?

          Give up. Save yourself the time and read something else (better?). The sex in the movie is better than the book.

            I was even bored by the sex scene, the book is just so English. Moving on to add the movie to my queue

              I read the whole thing...NOT - because the book was so great and I couldn't put it down...because I had to finish it... I am obsessive that way - cannot leave a book until I read the ending. However, I did skipped several paragraphs and did not miss a thing. I was so un-impressed after reading it, I was not planning on watching the movie...unless all of you think that it is better than the book.
              Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

                I'm usually like that too but I was able to put this book down. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was left unimpressed!

                I think the movie is better. Among other reasons, you get a visual image of what is going on and it is paced more quickly. I felt like I was going to diiiiiieeeeee waiting for that languid August to end (in the book). The movie makes more of a story out of what happens after the tragic event. The other plus to the movie is that James McAvoy is some serious eye candy. I can't compare but it must be hard to follow the movie without having read the book because I filled in a lot of unexplained details with backstory that I read. Definitely worth a netflix rental.
