  • The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

I read it many years ago.... and actually last week passed on my copy of it to a friend. I loved it when I read it before, but it did freak me out a little bit at the time - there's some weird stuff going on in it, right? It was so long ago that I can't remember details.

I had another book by him that I also just passed along: A Wild Sheep Chase. I liked that one too - it had a twisted/mysterious plot as well.

Right... I remember the WWII part now. Brutal.

This seems like a good description of the book (from editorial review on Amazon): Meaning always seems to be just out of reach, for the reader as well as for the characters, yet one is drawn inexorably into a mystery that may have no solution.

and also found this from a reviewer: Questions remain unanswered, characters vanish into thin air, things happen without as much as a hint at explanation.

I think what I liked so much about it was just the intensity and feeling I had while I was reading it....

I'll have to warn my friend that I just gave it to.
