Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World
By Tracy Kidder (Pulitzer Prize winner)
I liked the style of Kidder a great deal in addition to the subject matter. It's a worthwhile and absorbing read. The logistics of getting health care to countries that don't have proper roads or electricity is tragic but fascinating. The book made me think of my own talents that I can/will utilize to help others when my children are a bit older. Farmer's story is living proof that one person can positively influence so many.
This is a story about a doctor who dedicates his entire life to healing people in third world countries during med. school, residency and beyond. He centers his efforts on Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia.
Farmer believes that "the only real nation is humanity" - a philosophy that is embodied in the small public charity he founded, Partners In Health which eventually gets the attention (and money) of the Gates foundation.
