I'm not sure if it's been talked about before.... After Heidi posted a link to a video of Carolyn Jessop's talk of her new book... Well, I just had to get a copy. It's a biography of Carolyn's life story in the polygamist cult in Colorado City, AZ and her eventual escape from her oppressive community and husband with her 8 children. I'm nearly half way through the book and I'm just in shock about the way the cult members lived their lives. It's abuse and sickening to know it's been going on in our own country for decades. I consider myself an educated person, but I truly didn't understand the true dynamics in that polygamist cult. Anyways, I highly recommend the book and hope they make a film of her story.

      Re: Escape

I heard her speak on NPR recently and I had the same reaction to many of the details in her story. I think I have held a very laid back attitude towards polygamy in general . It isn't my choice, but if consenting adults are involved, I'm not sure it is my business to tell someone how to structure their family. Still, this was entirely different than I imagined. The polygamy was the least of the abuse. In fact, I think tagging the whole thing with "polygamist" cult makes people focus on that aspect alone and not look deeper at the treatment on the women and children in this cult.

It should go without saying that I realize that this book is NOT a reflection of mainstream Mormon culture.

Go and get it quick! I am totally changed by reading it. I can't believe how I was so unaware of this abuse that has been going on. Why hasn't Oprah interviewed this lady yet?? Gezzz Anyone... Someone...

The book is a very quick and easy to read. The only time you'll put it down is in disgust with the way this woman (and her children) where abused over and over. Anyways, it's very educational and highly recommended.

BTW I'm not sure about the hard back, but the paper back copy I bought was published this year and had updates as late as Sept 2007.

Ya know Angie I was going to post that disclaimer in my first post, but once you read the book it becomes obvious that even mentioning Mormons in the same context as this Colorado City, AZ cult is just an insult to all Mormons.
