  • 3rd Grade Recs

I'd try a historically based picture book. Off the top of my head--

The Scarlet Stockings Spy Edition 1. (Tales of Young Americans) -

The Last Brother: A Civil War Tale (Tale of Young Americans)

The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain --Peter Sis

Chris Van Allsburg also writes more complex picture books like Jumanji.

I have a few suggestions, though I don't know how useful you will find them.

The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scienszka and Lane Smith
Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi by CIndy Neuschwander (maybe too hard for 3rd graders)
A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon
How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long
The Paper Bag Princess by Robert N. Munsch
The Parts series by Tedd Arnold

Then there are always old classics like:

Aesop's Fables - there are several in here that children have likely not heard. The grasshopper and the ants is one that comes to mind.
The Emporer's New Clothes by Hand Christian Andersen
The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter

    I hope that helps!

We love Rotten Ralph (he is a cat that does lots of rude things) at our house....there are several books in the series. Luke recommends "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" and we all also like a book called "The Little House" or something like that.....the pictures always fascinated me.....it shows how a house in the country gradually becomes a house in the middle of a busy city through the years due to urban sprawl. It was around when I was little so I am sure you have all seen it, too. I just can't remember the name for sure.

        Those are great suggestions.

I'd probably ask the school librarian.
