  • The Long Emergency

The Economic Predictions thread reminds me that I wanted to share a recommendation for this book.

It takes the evidence of peak oil production, combines it with predictions about the viability of current energy alternatives, as well as the global climate crisis, and formulates a credible, incredibly scary picture of our economy, culture, international relations and more. Writing in 2005 he pretty much predicted the housing/mortgage disaster as well as the market upheaval, and from his extrapolations, there is no where to go from here but down.

It's an interesting read that has got my eyes open to making some serious lifestyle changes in the next few years. For example, the guy in Rapunzel's clip isn't the only person predicting that food production is going to be of vital importance very, very soon.

I started this book after reading a long thread about it on another forum. I just couldnt get into it. It was like The Road in real life. But mostly I thought it was a bit too much and a little bit slow. I think it must be just me bc it has been a really popular book.

Probably the same other forum where I saw it mentioned -- I didn't read the thread all the way through but the book title and concept percolated in my brain for a while before I finally laid my hands on a library copy a few weeks ago.

I think you might need to be in the mindset already? I had been stewing a little about peak oil for some time, but dithering about what *exactly* it might mean for me and mine. This book kind of connected some puzzle pieces that were already in my head, which made the first few chapters page-turners for me as I kept having epiphanies, LOL. I'll admit I skimmed a lot especially toward the end though.
