  • Recommendations for Books on CD?

I just read Kris's post that she's 'guilty' about buying books on CD. Guilty? NO WAY!!! They've been my sanity saver this year. I have a 40 minute commute to work each way, and being stuck in traffic with stupid Milwaukee drivers was putting my already evil disposition over the edge. (I was about this close to being on the evening news.) So after reading about them in 'Real Simple' magazine, I started checking them out of the library. So far I've listened to "Jane Eyre" read by Juliet Stevenson, one of my favorite actors (she does all the voices), and "White Oleander" and now I'm listening to "Sense and Sensibility".

It brings back wonderful memories of being read to as a child, and I find I actually look forward to getting into the car to hear the next chapter. An outstanding stress reliever, and great for road trips in the car too. Mike and I listened to "Icebound" by Jeri Nielssen on our trip to Kansas City for Thanksgiving. (The doctor who discovered she had breast cancer while wintering over at the South Pole.)

I've got a long drive to Arkansas coming up. Does anyone have any recommendations of ones I should buy for the way there--something I'll want to listen to more than once?

The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy- absurdist humor, sci fi, commentary on the world, read in Douglas Adams most excellent English accent!

I also rent books on tape from the local library. I hate driving, and I only have a 15 minute commute!!

I meant to post this during the holidays but my parents have a tradition that my brother and I have also adopted. Every Christmas Eve we listen to Dylan Thomas read his "A Child's Christmas in Wales". It's so funny and it gets funnier everytime I hear it. Every time I hear something new.

and I've been listening to this for 36 years now!!

          PS- It's available on cd.

Thanks, Kris! I love Bill Bryson's stuff. I just finished "The Lost Continent: Travels in Small Town America" and laughed all the way through. He's got a really dark sense of humor, which I adore. I'll have to check that one out.
