This is Deborah Johnson's first novel, about Revere Mississippi in the mid-1960s on the cusp of de-segregating schools. In that sense, it is historical fiction with the main plot being a "mystery" that by the end isn't quite what I expected. The book starts with a 10 year old black boy driving a dying white man who has been shot into the hospital. The characters are well-developed, flawed and likable or at least people whose motives and shortcomings make them human (with one or two exceptions). The ending is a little quick and pat but still an enjoyable read.
