Fifty Books for our Time

So Newsweek magazine published the following list in their last issue: http://www.newsweek.com/id/204300

I've decided I'm going to read them. I've always thought I needed to read more classics, more books that aren't just the most recent fad. So of course I don't want to buy them. I'm planning on borrowing most of them from the library, of course I went to look them up yesterday and 1-5 were all checked out, obviously several others have the same idea.

So I'm starting with #6 - Winchell by Neal Gabler

We'll see how it goes...

Neat! I read the article and would like to do the same, but I doubt it will happen any time soon. I read SO slowly, and I already have a reading list a mile long!

I was also disappointed (and somewhat embarrassed) that the only one on the list that I have read was about half of Among the Thugs.

Very Impressive!

I tend to stick to the "chick-lit" genre. Mindless, usually witty, easy reads typically about a hardworking woman tackling a career, relationships, and other bits of life.

Wow, Cheri that's very ambitious. We have about 5 or so of the books at home but I haven't gotten around to them yet. And I know at least half the list would put me to sleep on page 3.

I read the articles and saw the list and thought about reading a few, but I doubt I'll ever actually do it...

I wasn't in total agreement with the list. How 'bout that for getting out of the reading assingment? I liked some of the choices but thought others were more of a baby boomer selection than I'd choose. Obviously, I have "shadow of the boomer generation" issues.

I read today about an online book group for Infinite Jest. It assigns 75 pages a month and has in depth conversations in forums. Wasn't Fluff a Jest fan? I'm thinking I'd try that.

I've only read 1.5 of the books on the list. I got about 1/2 way thru "The Lost" and read all of "The Year of Wonders".

I'll look to the list for suggestions, but eh ... kind of had the same reaction as Angie.

Umm...I've only read six of those and I have a degree in literature. I'd like to read more, but that will probably have to wait. Frankenstein is my favorite book of all time so I was happy to see that one listed.

Yay! Another Frankenstein fan!! Sometimes I thought I was the only one... my friends would see it on my shelf and I'd get an eyebrow raise! (ME: no, it is very different from the movie, you REALLY should read it...no? fine. *sigh*)

Well like I said its my goal, we'll see. I'm starting with #6 and plan to post a review of each so that I can keep track, #6 actually looks very interesting except that it is HUGE!

So true. Everyone thinks it's just a book about a monster, but it really isn't. It's a story about what happens when man tries to play God and a "child" whose father has the opportunity to do right by him and love him, yet chooses to abandon him.

Sigh. I love that book.

I saw that last a little while ago. I wrote down a few of the books that I would like to read. I always have a list of books that I plan on reading. I did wonder where some of those books came from though.
