After hearing the author on "Fresh Air" I was intrigued and picked up the book at the library. Definitely a worthwhile read for me.
This is a warm and witty memoir of the author's childhood (and later life) in a restaurant family in 1950's New York. While there are many details about the restaurant and food, the book is really about families in general: stories, secrets, long-lost relatives, more eccentric members, etc. The book comes across as being light-hearted but as you finish it becomes heartbreaking. But heartbreaking in that good, tender kind of way.
