This book is about Alice Trift, a rather unhappy surgical intern who is absoutely lacking in social skills. Which means that he bedside manner and ability to get along with attendings is also sub-par. As an aside, the author's portrayal of residency and hospital life is surprisingly accurate.
She happens to meet Ray Russo, a traveling fudge salesman. He pursues her (thus the title) leading up to their marriage. (I'm not giving anything away, this is mentioned up front). Alice's loneliness and lack of social skills keep her from seeing Ray for what he is and the story is a "cautionary tale" based on her experience.
Her few friends (an IM resident and male nurse room mate) try to help her loosen up and improve her social skills and guide her through the relationship with Ray and problems at work.
A quick, light, well-written story that is perfectly suited to summertime reading!
