  • Need a book recommendation

    Or two or three.....

Here's the thing. I don't read a lot, and I am picky. Super picky. I don't like most books, but when I do like a book or an author, I really enjoy it. So, I need a book to enjoy.

    Things I am looking for:

Fiction. I don't want to read nonfiction. It's just not for me.

Page-turner: I want it to be so good that I can't put it down. If it takes longer than a chapter to get into it, I won't.

Favorite books: Jodi Picoult, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games (only the first one is a fav! I hated the third one), THe Davinci Code. In other words, I like the books that are favorites of a lot of people. I didn't really like the Twilight Series. I could not finish Kite Runner. Way too long to get going. I've read a number of the Oprah books. I've read the first outlander book in that series, but couldn't get into it anymore.

So list a few of your absolute favs that you would recommend to someone like me. Thanks!!

I have been reading the Game of Thrones series. It is a page-turner, in the same sort of genre as Lord of the Rings, but without as much magic or fantasy. Real people, with real foibles/faults, set in a fictional land/time.

I was going to say Gone Girl too. I didn't like it, but it sounds like you would.

The author of the Bloggess recently published a "memoir" called Let's Pretend this Never Happened. It looks fun.

Michael Koryta The Prophet. It's a mystery novel and a page turner! I love the way he writes.

Totally getting Let's Pretend this Never Happened!

Also love Game of Thrones. I'm on the third book and they are big, but definitely page turners and excellent writing. I also loved Harry Potter and freaking hated the last Hunger Games like you.

OH EMM GEE. So, I downloaded Gone Girl, and the narrator (I listen to books on using audible - my preferred reading method) is my high school class president. He is an actor and has been in a lot of commercials and The Three Stooges movie. We were in Hello Dolly together, and he was in all the drama productions. Anyway, so when I am hearing him talk, all I am thinking about is his goofy self and him! Now what? I'll try to power through, but what are the odds? Come on!

                      Wow! What a coincidence!

I loved Ready Player One. It's kind of like Hunger Games in that it's set in a dystopic future, but in this, everyone does everything through computers, including school, shopping, etc. It's fun because there are tons of 1980s references.

I also love Phillipa Gregory's historical fiction. I couldn't put down the Wideacre books or The Other Boelyn Girl.

Have you read The Nanny Diaries? The Confessions of a Shopaholic books?

I can get on board with Gone Girl, but it kinda bugged me too. If you totally love it, you could try Gillian Flynn's first book Sharp Objects, I thought it was slightly better than Gone Girl. I don't recommend her second book, Dark Places. I kinda hated that one.

Even better though -- I love all four of Tana French's books. Start with In The Woods and go in order from there. I think they have the same style of intrigue as Gillian Flynn's books, but with better writing and more likable characters.

I also second the recommendations of Game of Thrones. Love.

I really like C.S. Lewis - I've read all of Narnia and a couple of his more sci-fi books (The Space Trilogy). I also really like Pierce Anthony and Orson Scott Card. I recently re-read (listened) to the Great Gatsby - such a good book!

I always listen at double-speed...can't beat it I know you said no non-fic, but The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is pretty interesting and sciency - it's about HeLa cells and her life (the cells were taken from her)

I'm in the middle of this right now, and I'm still kinda undecided; I'm digging the 80's references, for sure, and that's keeping me going for now; we'll see how much I liked it when I'm done.
