  • Never Have I Ever...

What classic or popular books have you NEVER read?

I've never read anything by Ms. Austin or either Bronte. Twilight, Divergent, 50 Shades, Hunger Games.

50 shades, Jodi Picoult, any Russian lit, Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Dairy of Anne Frank, Watership Down (DH's fave).

I guess I have a summer reading list to work on...

I love Watership Down! (I also recommend his book, Plague Dogs).

I'm not a 50 shades girl; although, I have read The Hunger Games trilogy.

I'm proud to have never read Twilight, 50 Shades, or basically any of the recent wave of YA Fantasy beyond the Hunger Games trilogy. That was OK but not good enough for me to get into the whole movement. Teenagers in fiction are just not my cup of tea. Frankly I'm just embarrassed at the number of classics I haven't read...

Never read the hunger games. Read the first chapter of 50 shades on amazon because I wanted to see if the wiring was as bad as I had heard. It was.

Me, either. Never even tempted. I've never even heard of "Divergent."

              Add to my "nope, never"-I-am-socially-clueless-because-I-haven't-read:

--anything ever recommended by Oprah Winfrey (except Steinbeck's "East of Eden"--that was once on her list, right?)
              --Harry Potter
--anything written by John Grisham in the last ten years

I also have never read "Dracula." I've never read "Lady's Chatterley's Lover." I've never read "War & Peace."

Never read Harry Potter (gasp), Hunger games, 50 Shades, never finished Gone with the Wind, and I really dislike Dickens.

The Harry Potter no's make me sad. Truly, people.

No for me on 50 shades, Catcher in the Rye, Diary of Anne Frank, and I am sure a number of other classics.

No YA for me at all except Box Car Children and Nancy Drew when I was a kid No Jodi Picoult, Grisham, 50 Shades (is that YA?), or basically any popular modern lit. As far as classics I also steered away from all of the books my pseudo intellectual friends loved (because that made me smarter by now reading, right?): Catcher, So long and Thanks for All the Fish, any David Sedaris, the titles are escaping me now.

Here's are my big confessions: I've never read Shakespeare on my own. Not nearly as fluent as I'd like in Greek philosophy and the mythology makes my head spin. Major holes in my education.

You didn't miss anything. That is about my least-favorite-book-of-all-time.

I just read Watership Down this week. I refuse to read Twilight (and 50 Shades, being erotic fanfiction of Twilight, counts!) or Divergent. I never read Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer! ...Among others, since there are thousands of classics I haven't read; I started going through the Well-Educated Mind but haven't gotten far. Still, teaching my kids at home and encouraging them to engage with kids' classics has really opened me up to the world of these enduring authors! Dante and Virgil are up soon on my own to-read list, while Winnie-the-Pooh and Bambi are on theirs.
