  • A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

I absolutely LOVED this book!! Bill Bryson takes a witty, historical approach to explaining ... well ... everything. It's 500 pages long, so I was a little intimidated at first, but the subject material is so fascinating and the writing is so compelling that I was hooked by the end of Chapter One.

Bill Bryson examines all branches of science and their origins, from geology to cosmology and everything in between. The historical context and the characters that he describes in the process of discovery are absolutely fascinating. He asks questions like: How do we know what is in the center of the earth, thousands of miles beneath the surface? How can we know the extent and the composition of the universe, or what a black hole is? How can we know where the continents were 600 million years ago? How did anyone ever figure these things out?

If you have even a fleeting interest in science I would highly recommend this book. Bill Bryson makes the subject matter both interesting and attainable. I learned so much about science and the history of our planet and it wasn't even painful.
