The Eyre Affair

I've tried and tried and at page 90, am giving up. Heard great things, guess it's not for me or I've had too much time travel of late. Has anyone else read it?

I really liked it. Even read the two sequels. I think it depends if you have read the books that are referenced, you're more likely to get the characters from them.

I have read the books referenced....I think it is the pace of it. (Or at least I think I have read a good share of the books referenced; most of those characters haven't yet appeared). I picked it up because a friend raved about it! Oh well, glad you enjoyed it.

I gave it another go since I had a few days left before it was due back. I just had to make it past page 115 or so -- it really picked up after that.

I would summarize it as time travel mystery with a smart and witty female detective, Thursday Next, tracking down her the third most wanted criminal who is kidnapping characters from novels. Jane Eyre is one of his victims. And this doesn't really adequately describe the plot. It is complicated but not difficult to follow.

After this and The Time Traveler's Wife, I think I am taking a break with time travel fiction. It was initially hard to not compare the two expect The Eyre Affair to follow the "rules" of time travel set forth in TTTW.
