  • Life of Pi

"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel

About a boy named Piscine Patel, who lives with his family in a zoo in Pondicherry India. His family decides that they do not like the political climate (1970's) so they are relocating to Canada. Alas, he finds himself shipwrecked at sea, and the sole human survivor. This book takes him on an incredible journey of fighting for survival against the elements and a tiger that is in his lifeboat. His journey last 200+ days! The book is one that you cannot put down, and the end is so unexpected and thought provoking. Some parts are not for the squimish.

    Back Cover:
Pi Patel, a God-loving boy and son of a zookeeper, has a fervent love of stories and practices not only his native Hinduism, but also Christianity and Islam. When Pi is sixteen, his family and their zoo animals emigrate from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship. Alas, the ship sinks-and Pi finds himself in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi. Can Pi and the tiger find their way to land? Can Pi's fear, knowledge, and cunning keep him alive until they do?

I know, the theme is woven throughout the entire book. It really comes full circle in the end!

That reminds me, I need to get back to this book. I was listening to it on audio on the way back from a trip and loved it, but never ended up finishing it.

        You should...

You HAVE to finish it, the end is what makes the book!

Don't skip to it, it will only ruin the whole thing for you!

Wow! It was great--and you're absolutely right about the end. Without spoiling it for anybody who hasn't read it, is the version at the end the real story???
