I'm nearly finished 'My Sister's Keeper' by Jodi Picoult and have not been able to put it down, it's been a fantastic read. Just wondering has anyone read any of her other books? are they just as good? I was thinking of reading 'The Pact' next.

I'm reading it right now. I'm about 70 pages in and don't think I'll finish.

I just finished "The Pact" and although it was slow in some parts, I thought it was a very good book. It does have some pretty good twists and turns. I loved "My Sister's Keeper" and finished it in 2 days! I am now reading "Harvesting the Heart".

I just finished The Pact, it was not as good as her other books and at some parts I felt like I was reading a porno novel but all in all the end was very gripping and it left me wanting to know what was next.

Even more so though I would recommend The Tenth Circle, that was my first JP book I read and it got me hooked on her style of writing. I thought it was amazing and like all her other books, the ending was exteremly unexpecting!

        Happy Reading!

I'm about two thirds into My Sisters Keeper and I really don't remember crying over a book this much before. I'll have to check out JP's other books when I'm done.

I just read Harvesting the Heart by Jodi and really enjoyed it. I have never read her and was "hooked" on the characters right away.

My parents bought it for me for Xmas and it really hit home.

It's about a young woman who falls for a future heart surgeon and all the trials they experience during training and beyond.

They both are good people who love eachother but are in very different places 4-8 years into their marriage...mostly due to his job and how absent he is.

The writing about how alone this woman feels, yet she knows her husband loves her and is good at what he does completely spoke to me.

            Read it!

Sounds like something we should review for this site, Flynn. We should see how many medical marriage books we can find and how accurate they are. It could be interesting.

I take it you thought she had a decent handle on the medical/training relationship?

Hmmm....there certainly are other issues each character (the doc and the spouse) has to deal with, but yes I think Jodi does a good job making the "medical marriage" a realistic issue.

                The book deals with:
                • docs who are brilliant and used to having things their way -- not in a bratty sense but having things "work out" isn't something you hope for, it's something that happens to them.
how a SAHP and a doc (especially a heart surgeon) are somewhat bipolar worlds
what a doctor's wife is....dealing with fancy dinners and attending wives...
how one spouse has more education than the other

                It's a good read.

I think that's a great idea. It deserves it's own thread.

Per the reviews on this board, I picked up My Sister's Keeper today (It is payday ) but now I think that I should have picked up Flynn's title instead.

I just finished My Sister's Keeper and I have to give it mixed reviews.

On one hand it is a quick easy read that deals with a very relevant issue.

On the other hand, it begins to read like a script for a Lifetime TV movie. Some of the main characters aren't likeable, and I don't mean that in a complex/aware-of-their-humanity way. This book also has a certain pathos about it. Definitely not an upper.

I will read Piccoult again, but I wouldn't enthusiastically endorse this author.

I agree with Kelly for the most part. But it did suck me in pretty quick and I read it in just a few days.

                          Book Review

Flynn... THANKS for posting about " Harvesting the Heart " I picked it up today on my lunch break. Just started, but so far so good. Has anyone read "HOUSE OF GOD" by Samual Shem? It is a great book about Medical residency- the great experiences and tragedies felt by all who spend their lives in the profession. Great Read.. I'm sure many of you have read it... I'm a newbie to this whole thing.

Both DH & I read "House of God" and really liked it. I really think it should be a must read for all med school students. It's very synical but also very true.

Did you know House of God is read by many medical students in Germany?! My dh read it (and isn't there a sequel) in English back in the day...
