  • The Pursuit of Happyness

Will Smith did a terrific job in this movie, however the movie itself was less than stellar. I felt it was too sappy. I think it could have avoided the sap factor by focusing more on how Chris Gardner got to be where he was, and the factors that triggered his desire to get out of that situation. Too much time was spent showing his relationship with his son, which dragged on and on.

I have yet to read the book, but have read reviews that say he goes into depth on his whole life story. Again, I thought Will Smith's charasmatic nature shined brilliantly.

i agree with grasshopper, it was a decent movie, but i would have liked to see more scenes showing how he really excelled at work and a little less of the family drama...

I bought the book today - I'm going to read it first and then go see the movie.

We rented the DVD last night. DH and I both enjoyed it. I really like Will Smith and his son is so cute. It didn't seem to drag on for me. I just couldn't imagine being in that situation. So desperate and trying to keep it together. I cried when they gave him the job. I thought the movie was great. It is great to see a film about a touching life story featuring brown people. You get tired of the majority of movie options being about banging in the streets or the typical stereotypes-- because this what sells. There needs to be more films like The Color Purple, Antwone Fisher, Double Happiness, The Joy Luck Club (this truly is the Chinese mother/daughter anthem), Raise the Red Lantern, Memoirs of a Geisha, Real Women have Curves and the like. Just real stories. Anyhow, we enjoyed it.
